Indian Lab Claims First Zika Virus Vaccine

By Hank Campbell — Feb 03, 2016
A company in India began working on a vaccine for a disease that hasn't been in India for decades 9 months before it exploded in South America? It's okay to be skeptical.

Though the Zika virus hasn't been seen in India in about 60 years, an Indian group called Bharat Biotech, Ltd. claims it has a patent on the world s first vaccine. Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director, says they already have two candidates.

That is great timing. Maybe too great. Recent World Health Organization figures states that Zika is present in 23 countries. it has been linked to birth defects in Brazil, though most people are not harmed by it. Brazil currently leads the world with 3,530 cases.

The company says it can make one million doses of the vaccine in four months, though first it has to go through animal and human clinical trials.

Were they really so far ahead or is this like that time North Korea claimed they found a unicorn skeleton? Stay tuned.
